Tuesday Music: 60s Dance Party

by: Shahryar

Tue Dec 01, 2009 at 16:55:02 PM EST

This week we're having a party! A mid 60s platter party, so let's get dancing! Add your favorite dance numbers, please!

Here's Shorty Long doing Function at the Junction. Always a party pleaser!

Shahryar :: Tuesday Music: 60s Dance Party
Junior Walker had a very distinctive sax style. The group's biggest hit was probably Shotgun but this was also very popular.

Deon Jackson was pretty much a one-hit wonder with this gem. I love the references to what have to be people he really knows.

We could do a week on these guys. More Spencer Davis Group! Their biggest hit. Feel free to add more. :-)

Another 1966 song that we played over and over at parties. These are all 1966, by the way. What's that instrument? Fuzz bass? Guitar?

Carla Thomas had had a big hit years earlier with "Gee Whiz", maybe the sexiest song ever recorded. Here, five years later, she scores with a song that you can dance close to.

Slim Harpo was a bluesman who somehow rode high on the pop charts! "I know you can do it, so baby, get to it!"

Anyone know anything about the Capitols? I sure don't. All I know is we did The Jerk to The Cool Jerk. I notice that the kids have a new dance that appears to be called the Jerk but we know this one here is the real one.

Then sometimes after we had danced for a couple of hours (no wonder we were thinner then!) we'd sit down and talk or make out or whatever and listen to songs like this one from Manfred Mann.

Another good listening song from the Left Banke. On a personal note, when I was starting my career as a young teenager I received words of encouragement from Mike Brown, who wrote this tune. That was pretty cool.

normally I'd comment more.... (2.00 / 5)
but I just don't know that much about Deon Jackson, Shorty Long, Slim Harpo...

I remember we'd bring our new 45s to the parties and scramble to put our new favorites on the record player before someone else got there with something else. It's amusing to think that I was younger then than my granddaughter is now. I believe "amusing" is the right word.

amusing,.. (2.00 / 4)
shocking.. it's all the same when you're 'of a certain age'.

I must have been really busy in the 60s since very few of these ring a bell.. guess it has something to do with being the old timer here.

But I do love the entertain/educate balance you've found.  Thank you, Shah.

I approve all of these tunes. :-) (2.00 / 4)
so, hopefully, if there's anything you don't recognize it will be a pleasant surprise.

"Boots" has really grown on me (2.00 / 2)
I like it more and more in my old age. Hooks galore!

I remember dancing to (2.00 / 2)
"Boots" as a little kid.  I thought I was really cool and chic with it, but to others it probably looked more like my "Hogans Heroes" march than go-go dancing.

todd rundgren (2.00 / 3)
did a cool jerk (in a medley with ooh baby, baby & la la means i love you ) on his Something/Anything album.

this is the best i can find of it :(

Fun! (2.00 / 3)
I'd never heard him do that!

Todd Rundgren fascinates me because he's so talented yet he disparages his very best work. "I Saw the Light" and "We Gotta Get You a Woman" are really, really good but for some reason he thinks they're throwaways.

Thanks for posting this!
