George Washington's Tear-Jerker

Washington then opened a letter from a sympathetic congressman, but soon appeared to grow distracted. As his men wondered what was wrong, Washington pulled out a pair of glasses, which even his officers had never seen before. "Gentlemen," he said, "you must pardon me, for I have grown not only gray but blind in the service of my country."

The officers were stunned. Many openly wept. Their mutinous mood gave way immediately to affection for their commander.

Precedent fixed on true principles

On April 30, 1789, George Washington, standing on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street in New York, took his oath of office as the first President of the United States. "As the first of every thing, in our situation will serve to establish a Precedent," he wrote James Madison, "it is devoutly wished on my part, that these precedents may be fixed on true principles."

btw, I am soooooooo tired of snow, even though it's just drips and drabs here. but it has become annoying as it screws up my biking. and it's fucking cold.

I never even gave a thought to WINTER biking to work!  Yow!  And here I was all mopey because of the icky, snowy, crappy weather.. at least I don't HAVE to go out.  O baby, really sorry.. but remember - spring, sprang is gonna sprung soon.

Also someone at GOS the other day (i think it was Sunday) had an idea for working to get progressives elected at the very local level, e.g. schoolboards etc.  and building up from there...sounded familiar.

during the French and Indian war, he supposedly hated the red man. But something happened to this guy. WHAT? What triggered his about face?

He believed in the ideas generating this revolution... as he interpreted them. He wasn't a fool, and saw the vast divide between the lofty words and the real lack of intention to apply them to ALL.

He set out to make the words mean what they said on the surface: all men. indians and blacks included.

i find it fascinating...

as for local, i'd love to hear it more and more. it's a place where we still have some room to push back. grow it. how's about you, nc? you'd be great on a school board~!

how much his opinion improved, but I think the Rude Ones' point was that George did realize that the battle effort would be hurt if, in fighting the enemy [the British], there were a lot of  dead locals, the locals were likely to not be so sympathetic to the Revolution.

great, just on its face. for that reason also, he fought for taxation in order to give some value to the dollars they used to requisition supplies from civilians

but what is more interesting to me is this: Washington was explicit not just about white Canadians, but about INDIANS.

that's the subtle thing there ... his idea of individuals living in one country and all treated fairly/equally under the law. this is a major thing, imo.

just...hmmm....maybe that's it...in fighting them, he found out that the Indians were pretty smart, desirous of keeping their land and freedom (lives) etc. etc. i.e., human...

anyway, somebody thinks we're taking to much trouble to limit civilian casualties...cf: Glenzilla today....
