HEAD SHOTS

Here I am once again & as promised  I will only post images of life that is not visible from the surface.
Many people tend to think that life in our oceans consists mostly of fish, crabs, shrimp, & shellfish, like oysters, scallops clams & snails, plus mammals like dolphins, whales, & I have to also mention turtles, the darlings of the  gulf.
What many don`t realize is that the above mentioned  species make up a small fraction of the biodiversity of the oceans.
In the following images, try & look beyond the main subject, & look to the backgrounds of the images. Every bit of color is a living  organism.
The purple on the  reef structure is coralline algae.
Every little nook & cranny has little "bugs" living in them.
Every little filament you see is some kind of worm.
The reef is covered with billions & billions of life forms, & I`m just talking about these numbers, pertaining to my reef tanks. The sand  at the bottom contains billions of  these per cubic inch.
Now these are the bottom of the food chain, but also sometimes the first to die off when the water chemistry is changed by even parts per billion.
When the first link in the food chain is destroyed, the other links fall apart in rapid succession. That`s why I post these images. They are not spectacular in any way as images, but as examples of the spectacular life in the oceans that the planet depends on.
Regardless of their microscopic sizes.

Bummer (2.00 / 3)
Imagine if the gulf was dead.

Real bummer... (2.00 / 1)
I can't imagine much of anything is going to be alive in the Gulf for a long time to come.

I think it was today the 'turtle people' opened several nests of turtle eggs, egg crated them and shipped them to Cape Canaveral...two questions I have:  Just the other day it was reported that tar balls have appeared at Cocoa Beach (very near Canaveral) and what happens to next years turtles who try to come ashore on the Gulf to deposit eggs??

Don't mean to be a bummer, but this mess is beyond anything any of us can conceive...

You dedication to the Gulf is admirable, Head.  Thank you for doing this and keeping the disaster front and center, where it needs to be.

I`ve been promoting the underside of the sea for years.
It`s horrible I have to do this under/about the prevailing circumstances.
As I`ve said before these kind are the only images I`ll post till the gusher is stopped at the very least.
I have enough to go on for years, but hope I never have to use them all.

Sweet pictorial, KH (2.00 / 2)
Loved the tangs, but I always have.

The "other" things are often overlooked, but when you see the whole picture, they add infinite depth and beauty to the whole.

That`s it in a 'nut'shell. (just feeding those two down below)
The whole of the marine ecosystem is the sum of all it`s parts, no matter how microscopic.
If you remove some of what you can`t see, it diminishes the beauty of what you can.
Tang you very much.

Sigh. (2.00 / 3)
Here's a link to the Keys and Caribbean.  It lists the badass critters, not that it matters.  Although I think that an attack by some sea lice would be good for some BP personnel, and others too I guess.

Nocatz, (2.00 / 2)
I don`t think oil sharks can be bothered by sea lice, though an encounter with a nice big shark would get their attention & my cheers.
Great link also.
I`ve had encounters with some of the listed critters.
#1; Eel bites, always accidental on the eel`s part, since they can hardly see. Best to use a little feeding stick.
#2; Anemone stings are worse. The nematocysts are shot into your flesh at up to 100 G`s, then the burning starts.
#3; Poisoned by the Angel of Death, a species of Zoas of which I had many at one point. Luckily I realized I was being poisoned when I started getting a metalic taste in my mouth
