Today's decision by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton to block provisions of the Arizona immigration law was a legal victory for the Obama administration, but a political victory for Republicans. In the months before the crucial 2010 midterms Republicans were essentially handed a political gift with the decision.
The injunction issued by Judge Bolton is temporary until she makes a permanent ruling. In her order she agreed with the federal government's contention that the law could invade upon an area of law reserved exclusively for the federal government under the United States Constitution. Her decision keeps the state of Arizona from enforcing the most important provisions of the law, including the section that requires law enforcement to ask for documentation from those they suspect to be here illegally. Legally, many agree that the judge had good reason for her ruling. The doctrine or preemption is well established in constitutional law. Just like states can not coin money it has long been assumed by many that states can not make their own immigration law.

All of this will have the effect of keeping the issue in the news to the benefit of Republicans. Polls show that a majority (57%) of Americans favor the Arizona immigration law. Republicans will use the case to attacks the Obama administration, and Democrats, as weak on border security. The case also plays perfectly into the Republican argument that the federal government is encroaching on states' rights. Then, of course, there are the racial aspects of the story which draws strong emotions from supporters and opponents of the law.
We don't have to agree with the reality of what the Repug's are claiming, but they are claiming it anyway (as always, what's a little lie between true kkkonservatives).
Their base is going to be fired up like a mutha come November. We better get some fire going on our side too, or there will be WINGNUTTERY to pay.

Teaching kids to think again instead of just learning to take tests? What is this President thinking, dammit!!!!
Obama to deliver major education reform address
President Obama will deliver a major education reform speech at the National Urban League's 100th Anniversary Convention in Washington Thursday morning.
The president will discuss how his signature Race to the Top program and other initiatives are driving education reform across the country and focusing the nation on the goal of preparing students for college and careers, a statement from White House said.
"Now, I know some argue that during a recession, we should focus solely on economic issues," Obama says in prepared remarks released by the White House ahead of the address. "But education is an economic issue -- if not the economic issue of our time."
The Obama education plan champions better teacher pay, but also asks for tangible results.
"I want teachers to have higher salaries. I want them to have more support. I want them to be trained like the professionals they are -- with rigorous residencies like the ones doctors go through," Obama says. "All I'm asking in return -- as a president, and as a parent -- is a measure of accountability.
"Surely we can agree that even as we applaud teachers for their hard work, we need to make sure they're delivering results in the classroom. If they're not, let's work with them to help them be more effective. And if that fails, let's find the right teacher for that classroom."
Grover Nordquist is pissed and is asking how instead of educating the peon masses, why we can't just drown them in a bathtub....

Follow the link and check the picture. I notice the producers decided to place the Right Wing Blond Bimbo about as far away from the President as they could. I guess they didn't want the Pres to be spittle flaked during the exchange.
